Conference Room (HSR), room W-315. Attendance is required by all internal
medicine residents, and all medical students and interns who are currently
rotating with the internal medicine service, as well as Pulmonary,
Cardiology, and other internal medicine subspecialties. All house staff,
students, and attending physicians are invited to attend. A morning
Lecture will follow from 7:30-8:30 am. The lectures are scheduled by the
chief resident, and all interns are required to present a case study
during their medicine rotations. Senior resident present a formal primary
care lecture each Tuesday, and board review takes place each Friday with a
“Jeopardy” style competition with questions derived from the MedStudy
booklets. A monthly toxicology lecture is presented by an attending
toxicologist.
2) Noon Lecture:
A lecture presented by an attending physician is scheduled at Noon each
weekday by the department of medical education. Noon lectures take place
in the HSR and attendance is required by internal medicine residents, and
interns and students rotating on medicine services or medicine residents,
and interns and students rotating on medicine services or medical
subspecialties. All house-staff and attending physicians are welcome to
attend. Food is often provided by pharmaceutical representatives.
The AOA requires a sign-in sheet for all attending lectures and morning
report. This sign-in sheet will be used to verify attendance at these
educational conferences.
Interns and residents will be assigned to present cases and lectures
during the year by the Chief Internal Medicine Resident and will be given
at least one week notice for their presentation.
Failure to attend morning report, noon lecture, or to prepare assigned
presentations will result in the following obligations:
A .Missing morning report or noon lecture two times will result in an
extra day of call during a “gap night”. The intern or resident will not be
allowed to work any “gap nights” for a one month period unless already
scheduled.
B. Failure to fulfill obligation for one presentation results in the same
penalty as mentioned in A.
Excused absences are acceptable. Excuses will be determined on an
individual basis by Doctor Kowalczyk or Medical Education.
The night interns and residents will be responsible to discuss and inform
other interns and residents of admissions and difficult cases from
previous night on-call. It is very important to communicate with other
interns and residents regarding patient care during night on-call to
improve continuity of care.
During a four-week rotation in Internal Medicine, at Morning Report, each
intern is required to present an interesting case they participated with.
Pertinent x-rays, EKG’s, and a recent review article on the diagnosis or
work-up discussed should be included. In order to provide an example of
what is expected in a case report, an internal medicine resident will
often conduct a case report at the beginning of each four-week rotation as
scheduling permits.
Morning reports are also scheduled for non-medicine rotations. Please
check with the chief resident or attending prior to starting rotation to
determine time and location.
