REQUIREMENTS

Must follow all ACOS, AOA and SCS guidelines
Ultimate responsibility is to scrub for major cases
Papers must be on time and acceptable-no advancement to graduation unless done
Time in animate/inanimate and anatomy lab
Coordinated conferences with MSU residents
Tumor Boards
Aptitude Tests (yearly)
Journal Club
House Staff lectures
Application for ACOS candidate status
AOA membership
Failure to comply with above will result in probation

First Year-topics to be covered

Wound healing and clarifications
Suture skills
Acute Abdomen
Preoperative work up and postoperative care
ATLS Certifications
Laparoscopic labs
Familiarity with various surgical techniques (know different surgeons preferences)
Surgical Etiquette
Physiology, fluids, electrolyte re: surgical patients
Topics: Acute abdomen, various cancer (resident should acquire American Cancer Society, clinical oncology)
Familiarity with various cancers i.e.: breast, colon, gastric, ovarian, uterine, cervical, lymphoma, skin, pancreas, muscle, testicle, prostate, thyroid endocrine

Second and Third Year
Increasing responsibility in patient care and surgeries
Out rotations in various subspecialties in tertiary centers

Seniors
Managing various services with attendings
Performing major cases under supervision of attending surgeon
Should stay in house for fourth year
Assisting with running and presentation of Tumor Board

Curriculum
No more than three (3) consecutive months. Maximum six (6) months of out time

Scheduled out rotations (one month):
Urology-Dr. Zuckerman/D.K. Johnson
Colorectal-Ferguson Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Foundation
Trauma/Critical Care-Grant Hospital, Columbus, OH, Sparrow

Suggested Electives (one to three months):
 General Surgery
Nutrition
Pediatric
Non-cardiac thoracic
Plastic/Reconstructive

All scheduling of out rotations, lectures, time off, call schedules, etc. must be approved by the program director.
No two (2) residents out of hospital at the same time for more than one (1) week.
Probation-No more than two (2) 6-month probations allowed. Refer to Institution Policy regarding due process policy as stated in Resident Handbook.
Moonlighting-Is permitted only on weekends and holidays when not on-call and is not permitted during regular weekdays. Refer to additional information in the Institution Policy as stated in Resident Handbook.
